Governor Greg Abbott has signed a historic bill aimed at cutting off the flow of mail-order abortion drugs into the Lone Star State, strengthening Texas’ role as a national leader in the pro-life movement.
The legislation, passed by the Republican-led legislature and signed on Wednesday night, empowers private citizens to hold accountable those who traffic abortion-inducing drugs like mifepristone and misoprostol, both of which are already banned under Texas law. This law does more than reinforce existing bans; it allows citizen lawsuits against individuals, providers, and companies that aid the illegal distribution of these dangerous pills.
While the abortion lobby often markets these pills as “safe” and “private,” the recent tragic case of Justin Banta in Parker County reveals the dark side of mail-order abortion drugs.
Banta was charged with capital murder for allegedly secretly drugging his pregnant girlfriend with abortion pills, ending the life of her six-week-old unborn child, a life she had wanted to keep. Authorities say Banta purchased these drugs online and laced her drink without her knowledge.
This heartbreaking case shows why this legislation is so critical. Without access to abortion drugs by mail, this crime might never have happened, and another life would be on its way. The ease with which these pills can be obtained and used as tools of manipulation and violence is deeply disturbing.
The new law, modeled after the Texas Heartbeat Act, allows Texans to sue those who ship or facilitate the delivery of abortion pills into the state. Each violation could result in damages of up to $100,000. Importantly, the law does not target women who take the pills. Instead, it focuses on those who profit from or promote ending innocent life.
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Texas has remained at the forefront of protecting unborn children. By addressing the growing threat of mail-order abortions, the state continues to serve as a model for courageous, life-affirming governance. We commend Governor Abbott for his unwavering commitment to life through the signing of this legislation. It is a decisive step toward defending the voiceless and protecting women from the exploitation and dangers of chemical abortions.
